Slag (1970) a stage play by British writer David Hare (born 1947)[1].

The original text

A satire about three women teachers of a tiny isolated girls' school, who mutually pledge to abstain from sexual intercourse in protest against the dominance and abusive treatment of women by men, epitomized in the slur against women as "slags".

Originally presented by the Portable Theatre Company at the Hampstead Theatre Club in 1970 and then, on transferring to the Royal Court Theatre, won Hare the Evening Standard award for most promising new playwright. The original cast at the Royal Court were Lynn Redgrave, Anna Massey and Barbara Ferris.

Performance history in South Africa

1973: A production of this play was staged at The Space (Cape Town) in late November of 1973, directed and designed by Mavis Taylor with Grethe Fox, Jacqui Singer and Maralin Vanrenen.

Slag (2024) a radio drama by Afrikaans author Adriaan Havenga

The original text

A radio play, it tells of Theunis Kriegler en his daughter, Willa, who live on an isolated farm and farm with sheep. They seldom receive visitors, but one night a stranger arrives during a storm. The visitor appears frighteningly familiar to Theunis, they invite him in with far-reaching results.

The title of the play is an Afrikaans word which has two divergent meanings: It can refer to either "slaughter" or to a "crash/blow" (as a physical action or as a sound, as in a "crash of thunder").

Performance history in South Africa

2024: The drama was broadcast on the SABC radio station RSG in October. Directed by Ina Strydom with Juanita de Villiers, Tobie Cronjé and Donovan Petersen.
