Training
Trained at RADA.
Career
Worked with the National Theatre (1963), NAPAC (1965-1967) and PACT (from 1968). Since the 1990s he has been with Bateleur Films.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Performed in The Lion in Winter (1968), In the Bag (1968), Tinker's Curse (circa 1970), Misalliance (with PACT in 1978), The Passion of Dracula (for Toerien/Firth in 1979), Ross (with PACT in 1979), Bodies (at the Market Theatre in 1980), The Merchant of Venice (at the Market Theatre in 1980).
He also starred in the Leonard Schach production of Kennedy's Children at the Chelsea Theatre in 1975, in a revival of Journey's End in February 1977, Journey's End (1977), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1977), Relatively Speaking (1978), The Passion of Dracula (1979) and in Amadeus (1981).
John directed plays for the Theatre Workshop Company (Durban), including Candida (1976), A Thousand Clowns (1977), Rattle of a Simple Man (1976), Kennedy's Children (1976), One Season's King (1978).
He directed Ellen Terry the Harum-Scarum Girl presented by the Friends of the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 1981.
He has been involved in the training of young black directors such as Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom for film and television since the 1990s.
Awards, etc
He was awarded an Artes in 1996 as Best Director in a television drama for Africa PI.
