Birth of a Union is a one-act play by A. Gordon Bagnall (1898-1977).

The original text
Subtitled "A Dramatized Version of the National Convention of 1908 Which brough about the Union of South Africa", the play dramatizes the three issues which caused the most contention amongst the delegates: union or federation, the native issue, and the sitting of the capital city. It was first staged in 1960 published by Oxford University Press, London, in the same year.

1960: Performed at the City Hall, Cape Town, in May , as part of the Union Festival, held in celebration of fifty years of union.
