People's Experimental Theatre
Also known by its acronym PET. A radical black theatre group, one of a number of arts and culture organizations associated with the Black Consciousness Movement in the 1970s-1980s.
Structure and history
PET was formed in Lenasia in March 1973, in reaction to the death of Mthuli Shezi in 1972 and the banning of the SASO and TECON executive in 1973. It was led by Solly Ismael and Sadeque Variava (editor of the PET Newsletter).
The company disintegrated soon after however, when it was closed down by banning order and several of its leaders were arrested and charged with treason.
