Die Transvaler

Die Transvaler (1937-1993) was an influential South African newspaper.

The paper

Named after Transvaal Province, the newspaper was established in 1937 to promote the cause of Afrikaner nationalism within the Afrikaner-dominated National Party. Originally edited by Hendrik Verwoerd, the future prime minister.

Supportive of the apartheid ambitions of the government, the pinnacle of Die Transvaler's influence came in the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1983, the newspaper was relocated to Pretoria and rebranded as an afternoon paper. In 1993 it ceased publication — a year before the apartheid system was officially dismantled.

The history of the paper has been preserved in Die Transvaler Digital Archive, a valuable resource for scholars of African studies, history, politics, and media. It also represents a valuable historical preservation project and may be of interest to institutions that study war, genocide, the Holocaust, and apartheid.
