The company

The company that wpould become known as LAPA Uitgewers, was originally founded om the 1930s by Johannes Petrus van der Walt as a project under the auspices of the Unie-Boekhandel and was called Springbok-Biblioteek. The aim was to establish Afrikaans writers and develop the Afrikaans reading market. In 1958 Van der Walt's son, Manie, joined the company as managing director and in 1920 it was renamed J.P. van der Walt en Seun (Edms.) Bpk..

In October 1996 the company was bought by the the ATKV , an Afrikaans cultural organization, and the name was changed to LAPA.

It finally became part of the Penguin Random House South Africa empire, and is described as follows by the company: "The imprint now focuses on genre fiction broadly defined, and aims to provide readers with engaging, high quality reading material. LAPA is dedicated to the ongoing development of Afrikaans and the types of stories that South Africans choose to tell therein. The Lapa imprint is also recognized for its array of craft and cookery titles"[1]
