Biography
Born Karina Lou Bekker in Graaff-Reinet in 11 April, 1945, she completed her schooling i.a. at the Hoër Meisieskool Oranje in Bloemfontein, studied at the University of the Orange Free State (UOFS), obtaining a BA with majors in English and History. Married Temple Hauptfleisch in 1968. Mother of IT Company director Anzel Mercker and theatre director, designer and writer Gaerin Hauptfleisch.
Taught one year, then worked for PACOFS as part-time usher and assistant front-of-house manager. Worked in libraries in Pretoria and Stellenbosch for 26 years, before becoming a research assistant and educational co-ordinator of outreach programmes at the University of Stellenbosch's University Museum and Gallery (2000-2010).
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
At the start of the 1960s, while at university, she became the organiser of student ushers for productions put on PACOFS, continuing to do this after her marriage to Temple Hauptfleisch, later also taking charge of programme sales at the Civic Theatre, Bloemfontein for three years. Having moved to Pretoria, she was for a brief time the secretary of Dinkteater in the 1970s, and from 1988 onwards served on the editorial staff of the South African Theatre Journal as subscriptions manager, a job she did for more than twenty years (1988-2011).
Over the years she has been an occasional researcher on theatre and art matters and a contributing author to the ESAT encyclopaedia on South African theatre.
