Die Buite-Egtelike Ouma ("The illegitimate grandma") is an Afrikaans farce by Nico Luwes (1954-).

The original text

A comedy about a dentist who has a bit of a boisterous night out before leaving for England for a year. On his return he is visited by a young woman who looks vaguely familiar, plus his excited mother and his friend, bearing a special bottle of champagne. Chaos ensues.

Translations and adaptations

Adapted by the author for a male lead and renamed Die Buite-Egtelike Oupa ("The illegitimate grandfather") in 2013. A copy of the adapted text avaialble from the AKDA archive of contemporary Afrikaans plays. .

Performance history in South Africa

1988: Staged as Die Buite-Egtelike Ouma by PACT in the State Theatre Arena in February, directed by Pierre van Pletzen, with Hannes Muller (Dr Jeff Johnson), Jurgen Hellberg (Dr Koos Cruiwagen), Michele Burgers (Jeanette Dekker), Marchelle Verwey (Zahn Volhand) and Lida Meiring (Ida Johnson).

2013: Staged as Die Buite-Egtelike Oupa at the Vryfees in Bloemfontein, directed by Nico Luwes, with Johann Nell as "Oupa", Hennie Jacobs, Alec Debbo, Elmari Lampbrecht , Lindy-Lee Kleynhans and Gerben Kamper.

2023: Performed as Die Buite-Egtelike Oupa by PEAAT at the Little Theatre, Port Elizabeth Central, Gqeberha 10 Oktober, directed by Emercia de Lange, with Albert Maritz as "Oupa", Armand Loftie Eaton, Cobus Lombard, Christie Swanepoel and Vasti Myburgh
