Following in his father's footsteps, Gustav has a passion for radio work and as a youngster performed in a number of Springbok Radio daily soap operas, including the role of "Rudi" in Die Banneling. He was also involved with the SABC as a voice artist in the early days of television when overseas programmes were dubbed into Afrikaans.

He then became a volunteer with Radio Veritas, presenting a weekly programme "Ons Praat Afrikaans" ("We speak Afrikaans"). Gustav coined the phrase: "Die Goeie Nuus se Beurt" ("The Good News's Turn") as the slogan of Radio Veritas. His programme focused on issues of a Christian nature, and featured features South African artists doing work in Afrikaans. His music was sponsored by Gospel Direct.
