Papá Juan: Centenario

Papá Juan: Centenario is a play (1909) by Serafin Alvarez Quintero (1871-1938) and Joaquin Alvarez Quintero (1873-1944) - known as "Los hermanos Quinteros" (the Quintero brothers)[1].

Not to be confused with Le Centenaire, a French play in five acts by Adolphe Philippe d'Ennery, translated into Spanish as El Centenario (published in Malaga, 1887).

The original text

The Spanish play was produced as El Centenario at the Teatro de la Comedia, Madrid, 14 December, 1909, and published in Madrid by Sociedad de Autores Españoles in 1910.

Translations and adaptations

The Spanish original was translated into English by Helen and Harley Granville-Barker with the title A Hundred Years Old and published in Four Plays (1927).

Translated into Afrikaans as Die Honderdste Verjaarsdag ("the hundredth birthday") by Ants Kirsipuu (1927-2003). The translation was also performed as Oupa Kanniedood ("Grandpa diehard").

Performance history in South Africa

1940: : Presented in English as A Hundred Years Old by the University of Cape Town’s Speech and Drama Department and their University Dramatic Society at the Little Theatre in April, directed by George Vollaire.

1956: Performed in the Kirsipuu Afrikaans translation by the National Theatre Organisation as Honderd Jaar Oud.

1957: Performed in the Kirsipuu Afrikaans translation by the National Theatre Organisation under the title Oupa Kanniedood. Directed by Jannie Gildenhuys, who also played the role of "Antonon". Others in the cast were Siegfried Mynhardt, Francois van Wyk, Susan Jansen, Sann de Lange, Cobus Rossouw, Tilana Hanekom, Retha Erasmus, Eghard van der Hoven as "Trino", Leonora Nel as "Currita". Decor and costumes by Frank Graves and Doreen Graves.
