First performed in Bochum, East Germany, in February 1985.

Translations and adaptations

Translated from the German into English and into Afrikaans by Arnold Blumer.

A production, directed for German television by Andreas Morell, of Heiner Müller’s play was first staged at the Kammerspiele, Munich in 2003 and directed by Johan Simons with André Jung as Titus.

In 2009, Brigitte Maria Mayer, an artistic photographer and Heiner Müller’s last wife, adapted Müller’s 1985 play as a film , featuring their daughter Anna Müller as "Lavinia" and Jeanne Moreau as "Tamora".

Performance history in South Africa

1986: The first South African production was done in Afrikaans by CAPAB, opening 3 November 1986, directed by Marthinus Basson, with a cast that included David Clatworthy, Mark Hoeben, Neels Coetzee, Johan Esterhuizen, Lionel Newton, Jamie Bartlett, Edward Turner, Susan Dall, David Butler, Robert Finlayson, Leslie Fong, Marion Holm, Antoinette Kellermann, Claire Berlein, Willie Fritz, Gustav Geldenhuys, Fiona Coyne. Lighting by Pieter de Swardt. Music by Johan Cloete and Peri Lykiardopoulos.

1987: The same production presented at the National Arts Festival, July 1987.
