J.M. Belinfante

J.M. Belinfante (fl. 1860s-1880s) was a Dutch speaking publisher, amateur playwright and actor.

Biography

He was the owner of a Dutch bookshop and publishing business in Cape Town. Inter alia he started a short-lived local newspaper, Het Afrikaansche Familieblad in the late 1860s.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

A member of the Cape Town based rederijkerskamer called Aurora II (1866-1887), for which he acted (tending to specialize in female roles), served as ballet master and wrote or translated a few Dutch plays.

The plays include De Ster van het Noorden (a Dutch adaptation of Meyerbeer and Scribe's piece L'Etoile du Nord, 1872), De Diamanten der Kroon (a Dutch adaptation of by Scribe (17919-1861)[1], with Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges (1799-1875) [2]and composer Daniel Auber1873),
