J.M. Belinfante

J.M. Belinfante (fl. 1860s-1880s) was a Dutch speaking publisher, amateur playwright and actor.

Biography

He was the owner of a Dutch bookshop and publishing business in Cape Town. Inter alia he started a short-lived local newspaper, Het Afrikaansche Familieblad in the late 1860s.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

A member of the Cape Town based rederijkerskamer called Aurora II (1866-1887), for which he acted (tending to specialize in female roles), served as ballet master and adapted and translated a few plays for the company, among them De Ster van het Noorden (a Dutch adaptation of Meyerbeer and Scribe's piece L'Etoile du Nord, 1872) and De Diamanten der Kroon (a Dutch adaptation of Les Diamants de la Couronne by Scribe, De Saint-Georges and Auber, 1873).
