The title Die Bywoners ("the tenant farmers" "or "the sharecroppers") can refer to a theatre company or to a play.


Die Bywoners: The theatre company

Die Bywoners("The sharecroppers") (also billed as Die Bywoners Teaterproduksies) was an Afrikaans production company, founded in Johannesburg by Schalk Jacobsz and Elma Potgieter in 1980, with the aim of producing independent , indigenous works in Afrikaans.

They produced the first Afrikaans translation of Athol Fugard's play Hello and Goodbye, called Hallo en Koebaai, directed by Jan Engelen. It starred Schalk Jacobsz and Elna Potgieter and was staged at Upstairs at the Market in 1981 ***

1981 – Hallo & Koebaai! (Athol Fugard vertaal deur Schalk Jacobsz) Upstairs by die Mark in 1981;

1982 – Hallo & Koebaai vir Freddy Philander-Produksies in Namibië;

1983 – Darling Blossom – eenvrouvertoning deur Elma Potgieter in Johannesburg;

1986 – Die Wildsboudjie ter viering van Johannesburgse Eeufees – die enigste Afrikaanse produksie vir die geleentheid;

1986 – Hoer of Heilige deur Corlia Fourie – spelers: Elma Potgieter en Karin Retief; 1996 – Moervrug – eenvrouvertoning deur Elma Potgieter – deur Elma verwerk uit Engemi Ferreira se novelle, Die Jaar Toe My Ma Begin Sing Het.

Die Bywoners - the play

Die Bywoners is the title given to one of the many Afrikaans translations done of Athol Fugard's English play Boesman and Lena.
