First performed by George Alexander at the St James' Theatre, London, on 28 April, 1894 and printed privately in London by Chiswick Press in the same year.

Performance history in South Africa

1895: Performed by Edward Sass and his Gaiety Company in the Cape Town Opera House, under the auspices of the Wheeler Brothers, as part of a season of plays that opened on 1 June till late July.

The Masqueraders - The company

The Masqueraders was a small musical ensemble (active circa 1918-1921), that at one time appeared at the Standard Theatre in Johannesburg for some weeks and then toured the country. Members over the years included Billy Matthews and Bertie Solomon.
