The Profligate

The Profligate is a play in four acts by Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934)[1].

The original text

First performed at the Garrick Theatre, London on 24 April, 1889. First Printed, 1891 by William Heinemann.

Translations and adaptations

Translated and adapted into German by Oscar Blumenthal (also found as Oskar Blumenthal, 1852-1917)[2] as Falsche Heilige ("False Saint") and performed in at the Stadttheater, Hamburg, in 1891. Published by Bloch, 1891.

Performance history in South Africa

1888-9 Performed by Lillian Beddard and her company in South Africa, with Beddard as "Leslie Brudenell". Among the cities played were Johannesburg (the Theatre Royal, 1-3 July), Kimberley and Cape Town (the Exhibition Theatre).

1892: Performed in the Vaudeville Theatre, Cape Town, by the visiting Emilie Bevan Comedy Company as part of a three-and-a-half month season of 20 plays which began on 8 August.
