The original text
Inspired by Molière's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Van Maurik created "Janus Tulp" as a type of "Hollandse burgeredelman" (lit "citizen aristocrat"), a barber who had become rich.
The name "Janus Tulp" has since become a metaphor in the Netherlands.
