The Great Waltz is a musical with book by Jerome Chodorov and the music of both Johann Strauss senior and his son Johann junior. The show deals with the conflict between the two.

Performance history in South Africa
1976: Staged by Dennis Reinecke for PACT Opera in December 1975. Anthony Farmer directed and designed the sets and Neels Hansen the costumes. Musical direction was by Leo Quayle and Geoffrey Sutherland was the choreographer. Lawrence Folley was cast as Strauss senior with Michael Renier as his son. Jean Fenn, who had played the role in America, was brought out for the role as Helen. A revival of this production opened at the Civic Theatre, Johannesburg on 11 November 1976. It was again revived in 1981.
1987: In 1987 all the performing arts councils joined forces to stage a new production of The Great Waltz that would tour all major cities. Jean Fenn once again came out to star opposite Lawrence Folley, with Sharon Rostorf, Barry Coleman and Carina Cronjé. Directed by David Matheson and choreographed by Geoffrey Sutherland, the season opened at the State Theatre in November.
