El Trovador is a flamboyant and incident filled melodrama by Antonio García Gutiérrez ()[].
First performed in 1836.
Verdi's famous opera, Il Trovatore ("The Troubadour") was based on the play, with an Italian libretto largely written by Salvadore Cammarano.
A burlesque version of the opera was performed by the Christy Minstrels, also during their South African visit in 1862.
