Elaine Lee (born Elaine Joyce Knoesen, 1939–2014) [1] was a South African-born Australian-based theatre and television actress and entertainer best known for her role of Vera Collins in the very popular 1970's Australian television soap opera Number 96 [2].

Biography

Elaine Lee was born in Springs, Transvaal on 23 December 1939. Married South African-born actor Garth Meade (divorced in 1976) and emigrated to Australia in 1970.

Career

She started acting in the East Rand Theatre Club in Benoni and worked on radio and stage in South Africa for a number of years before emigrating to Australia where she became a prominent television star.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Started out at the East Rand Theatre Club and later worked at the Alexander Theatre as a stage hand before she joined the Brian Brooke Company where she first appeared in Charley's Aunt and Platonic Nymph, before she was cast in the title role in The World of Suzie Wong in 1961.

She starred in According to the Evidence, which Ricky Arden directed at the Alexander in 1966, together with Diane Wilson. ***(Tucker, 1997)
