The World of Suzie Wong

The World of Suzie Wong [1] is a 1957 novel by British novelist Richard Mason (1919–1997) [2]. It tells the story of a young English artist, Robert Lomax, who lives in Hong Kong in the 1950's and Suzie Wong, a Chinese prostitute.

Translations and adaptations

The novel has been adapted into a play, a film and a ballet.

Paul Osborn (1901-1988) [3], American playwright and screenwriter wrote screen and stage adaptations of the novel. His stage adaptation, also called The World of Suzie Wong, was first staged in 1958.

1961: Staged in the Brooke Theatre in Johannesburg by The Brian Brooke Company, directed by Brooke, with Elaine Lee (Suzie Wong), Robert Haber (Robert Lomax), Harold Lake (Ben Jeffcoat), Nicky Caras (Kity Fletcher), Robert Langford (Mr O'Neill), Ho Hock (Ah Tong), Marlene Bunn (Gwennie), Mary Sam (Minnie-Ho), Adrienne Bloch (Lily), Marlene Lee Shong (Typhoo), May Lan Ho Tong (Happy Room Girl), Raymond Lan Ho Tong (Bartender), Dudley Bunn (Vendor), Henry Vaughan (Police Sergeant), Chris Davies (American soldier) and others. Decor by John Foxen and costumes by Connie Rainsford.
