De Loterijbriefjes, of De Bedrogen Schoenlapper

De Loterijbriefjes, of De Bedrogen Schoenlapper ("The lottery tickets, or the cheated cobbler") A comedy in two acts by the Dutch theatre manager and actor Ward Bingley (1757 -1818)[1], based on a French orignal.

The original text

Apparently an adaptation of a French work Les Billets de Loterie by an anonymous author. However, there is a suggestion by Loos[2] that the French work may in its turn have been based on a German play.

There is also another play, Le Billet de Loterie, an opéra comique in one act by Jean-François Roger and others, which was first performed at the Théatre l’Opéra-Cómique Impérial on 14 September 1811 and published in Paris by Vente in the same year - which may in fact have been the French version of the original German, and that Bingley had perhaps used the German version?

Translated into Dutch as De Loterijbriefjes, of De Bedrogen Schoenlapper by Ward Bingley and first performed at the Amsterdamsche Schouwburg (possibly in 1794), it was published in Amsteldam by Dempter 1794 and credited to Bingley.

Apparently the title was adapted to De Loterijbriefjes, of De Bedrogen Schoenmaker ("The lottery tickets, or the cheated shoemaker")in later publications.

Performance history in South Africa

1822: Performed in Dutch as De Lotery Briefjes in the African Theatre, Cape Town on 23 November by Tot Nut en Vermaak, with Makin, of De Ontdekking van Madera (Barbaz) and Het Losse Schot (Von Kotzebue).
