The Philanthropist [1] is a 1975 play by British playwright Christopher Hampton (1946- ) [2]. It was written as a response to Molière's Le Misanthrope.

1975: Staged by the University of Cape Town Drama Department in the Little Theatre, directed by Robert Mohr, with Neville Thomas ((Philip), Philip Godawa (Donald), Peter Cartwright (John), Marjorie Smith (Celia), Bobby Heaney (Braham) Estelle de Gouveia (Araminta) and Judith Krummeck (Liz). Sets by Peter Krummeck and costumes by John Caviggia.
