Denise Newman
(19**-) Actress for stage, film and television, stage manager, drama facilitator and -teacher. Born in Cape Town.** Began her theatre career working as actress and assistant stage manager for the Space Theatre in the 1970s, acting in All on Her Own, In Two Minds, The Guise and was SM for The Disguise of the Ashes that arose out of the Karnaval at Scarborough to prove that Leonardo was Right – an investigation of guilt and The Guise as well as ASM for Glass House. Since then a freelance actress, with stage performances including roles in Hell is for Whites Only, Hamlet, King Lear, The Trick is to Keep Breathing, Severance and Goodbye Kiss, Buckingham Palace District Six (***, 2000?*), and Sorrows and rejoicings (Athol Fugard at the Baxter, 2001). In the 1990s became involved in ACTS (African Community Service). Film & TV roles include City Lovers (Barney Simon, 1980), Onder Engele (****, 199*), Tussen Duiwels (***, 199**), The Sexy Girls (MNET, 199*), Sara, Sara (an Italian film), Two Weeks in Paradise (SABC, ***) and Meeulanders (SABC, 199*), DENISE NEWMAN Denise Newman has been a professional actress since 1979, starting her career at the Space Theatre. She has worked locally and internationally with numerous directors and actors. Highlights include: Sorrows & Rejoicings with Athol Fugard, Hear & Now with Lara Foot-Newton, Hell is for Whites Only with Pieter-Dirk Uys, Jocasta Rising with Carol Michelle Kaplan. Her television career includes leads in: Erfsondes, Onder Engele, Tussen Duiwels, Meeulanders, Two weeks in Paradise, People like Us, Hotnotsgode, as well as being asked to play a guest role in the daily soap, 7de Laan. Films include the internationally acclaimed Forgiveness, City Lovers and Sexy Girls. Over the years she has been nominated several times, has even won a few but is more concerned about her role as teacher/facilitator when time allows. Hell is for Whites Only (Pieter-Dirk Uys, 1982), Oscar in Afrika (Aardklop, 1999).
