Karel Schoeman (1939-2017) [1]. Iconoclastic Afrikaans novelist, scriptwriter and librarian.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Besides publishing numerous award-winning novels and documentary books, he has translated plays, including Maria Stuart by Schiller,Die Huweliksbedrog of a comedy play by Pieter Langendijk, Liebelei published by Human & Rousseau, 1981, Maria Stuart published by Human en Roussouw 1973, The Cherry Orchard translated into Afrikaans as Die Kersieboord published by Human and Rousseau in 1975, Uncle Vanya translated as Oom Wanja published by Human & Rousseau in 1968, Op Hoop van Zegen translated as Op Hoop van Seën published 1982, Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui translated as Die Weerstaanbare Opkoms van Arturo Ui.

His novel By Fakkellig has been adapted for the stage.

He has also written a number of radio and TV scripts. These include Vedlslag published by Human & Rousseau; 1989 and Die Jare published by Human &; Rousseau, 1976.
