Originally a French novel, Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux (published as a serial in Le Gaulois September 1909 to January 1910; as a novel in April 1910 by Pierre Lafitte).
Numerous stage and film works have been based on it (see Wikipedia for a list of adaptations[1].

Performances in South Africa
Opened in 2004 at the Opera House, Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town and at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria.
In 2011 - 2012 another South African tour of the show opened at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town and at the Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg.
