No 58
No 58 was a a nightclub and a restaurant venue Hillbrow, Johannesburg, founded and run by Barbara Thompson and Ute Hasse from the beginning of the 1980s till the early 1990s.
The venue moved to slightly larger premises a year later and was then known as No 58 Too.
The venue
A popular and influential performance space, it was the launching pad for a number of South African cabaret and revue artists, including Kate Normington, Joanna Weinberg, Natalie Gamsu, Jennifer Ferguson, Mark Banks, Natalia da Rocha and Louis Zuppa.
Hillbrow, Johannesburgshe and her partner Ute Hasse opened No 58 in Hillbrow, as a nightclub and restaurant, moving to slightly larger premises a year later and calling it No 58 Too. Here they planned entertainment, nurtured new talent and directed and choreographed shows, for what became one of the best known and most influential clubs in Johannesburg in the 1980s. In 1989 she and Hasse left for Hawaii, but their business there failed and they returned. From 1995 till 1999 Thompson ran the Punchline Pub, situated in the Johannesburg Civic Theatre.
