No 58
No 58 was a popular nightclub and a restaurant venue Hillbrow, Johannesburg (1980s-1990s)
The venue moved to slightly larger premises a year later and was thfeafter known as No 58 Too.
The venue
Founded and run by Barbara Thompson and Ute Hasse from the beginning of the 1980s till the early 1990s, the popular and influential performance space became the launching pad for a number of South African cabaret and revue artists, including Kate Normington, Joanna Weinberg, Natalie Gamsu, Jennifer Ferguson, Mark Banks, Natalia da Rocha and Louis Zuppa.
In 1989 she and Hasse left for Hawaii, but their business there failed and they returned. From 1995 till 1999 Thompson then ran the Punchline Pub, situated in the Johannesburg Civic Theatre.
