Dirk J. Balfoort

Dirk J. Balfoort (1886-1964) was a Pretoria based bookkeeper and amateur director and composer.

Not to be confused with his son, Dirk Jacobus Balfoort (1886-1964) [1]

Biography

Born in Holland, he married - Den Haag 11-11-1964). Zoon van Dirk Balfoort, ambtenaar bij de Transvaalse legatie, en Elisabeth Joanna van 't Hul. Gehuwd op 11-2-1909 met Janna Catharina Odink. Uit dit huwelijk zijn geen kinderen geboren.afbeelding van Balfoort, Dirk Jacobus Drie jaar na de geboorte van Dirk Balfoort vertrok het gehele gezin uit de woonplaats Utrecht en vestigde zich in Pretoria in verband met de functie van de vader. Het verblijf in Transvaal duurde 10 jaar. Na de terugkomst in Europa wijdde de jonge Balfoort zich aan een opleiding tot beroepsviolist, aanvankelijk aan het Conservatorium te Brussel, daarna aan het Conservatorium te Amsterdam.

He was a bookkeeper and secretary for the newspaper De Volkstem and was well known for his leading role in the musical life of Pretoria. In the 1890s he was a member of the Pretoria-based Rederijkerskamer called Onze Taal, founded in 1891, fr which he directed a number of stage rpoductions. He was also a composer who, with H. Roorda, had originally composed the song “Onze Taal”, from which the name of the society was derived.
