The original text
Based on the French story La Peine du Talion by Charles de Bernard (1804-1850), published by Michel Lévy frères (Paris) in 1853. (Some sources, e.g. Allardyce Nicoll) list it as La Loi du Talion) Talyor's the play was first performed on 12 May 1856 in the Olympic Theatre, London. Published by Lacy in 1856 as No XXVII of Lacy's Acting Editions.

Performance history in South Africa
1859: Performed in the Harrington Street Theatre, Cape Town, by the Cape Town Dramatic Club on 27 May: Retribution (Taylor) with Masaniello (Brough?), and a performance of the brass band of the 59th Regiment.
