Contents
Origins
Founded in 2001 as the Volksblad-kunstefees (Volksblad Arts Festival), it takes place during the June/July holidays on the campus of the University of the Free State.
Aims
Originally founded, like the KKNK and Aardklop, to promote and create a space for Afrikaans cultural work, it was later renamed the Vryfees ("Free Festival"), as the mandate expanded, and in 2018 the name was changed once more to become the Vrystaat Kunstefees (the Vrystaat Arts Festival in English and Tsa-Botjhaba in Southern Sotho), with the objective now being to also forge creative connections with English and Sotho cultures.
Structure and management
The festival publishes an official newspaper for the Vrystaat Arts Festival called Stronk, first published in 2008, and appearing every day for the duration of the festival (Tuesdays to Saturdays).
History and achievements
Originally sponsored by the Afrikaans-language daily newspaper Volksblad [1].
