Biography

His family confirmed the news, saying but details around his death are yet to be revealed.

The actor recently penned an apology to Cassper Nyovest for using vulgar language that involved the rapper's mother following backlash from social media and gender-based violence (GBV) organisations. This as a video of Shai challenging Nyovest circulated on social media in which he challenged the musician to a boxing match. In his apology, the actor said the intention was to challenge him to a public engagement that would lead to an exhibition fight in the hopes of bringing issues of GBV to a higher platform. The rapper is known to initiate boxing matches with prize money as high as R100,000. Shai is survived by his wife and two children. Shai has starred un countless productions over the years and is best known for productions such as Bophelo ke Semphekgo, Soul City, Generations, Ashes to Ashes and most recently, The River.

Shai passed away on Saturday morning 22 January, 2022.

The award-winning actor appeared on numerous stage plays, feature films and television productions like 7de Laan, Bophelo ke Semphekgo, Soul City, Generations, Ashes to Ashes and most recently, The River.


His first major role was creating and performing the original “Jakes” in Sophiatown by Junction Avenue Theatre Company. Other appearances on stage include For Your Ears Only, Maru, Nongogo, Tooth and Nail.

In 2007 he was a member of the NAC panel of experts and chair of the panel on theatre and performance.

He appeared in the feature films The Sheltering Desert in 1991, Fools, Taxi to Soweto, Place of Weeping, Hold My Hand I'm Dying, Lambarene and in the SABC television detective drama series Zero Tolerance.

Awards, etc

He won a Vita Award (Free State region) as best actor for Sophiatown.

Avanti Award, best supporting actor in a television drama for Soul City.
