Biography
He was possibly a marine officer aboard the H.M.S. Boscawen, though he may also have been a Cape Town resident.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
A Mr Browne is named one of the Le Roy and Duret company on their visit to Port Elizabeth and most probably Cape Town, round about October to November of 1865, and a W.G. Browne is specifically mentioned as the composer of a "new Overture and Music" for Ray and Cooper's production of Little Jack Horner, or Harlequin A.B.C. on December, 1865. Given the dates and the relatively singular spelling of the name, there is a possibilty that the references are to the same person, as F.C.L. Bosman
(1980, p.490) also seems to suggest in his Index.
