The concept

As a concept, today used to refer to the purpose built municipal theatre of a town or city. (Stadskouburg in Afrikaans, Stads Schouwburg in Dutch and early Afrikaans.) The term often incorporporated into the name of the particular theatre (Johannesburg Civic Theatre, Bloemfontein Civic Theatre, Bellville Civic Theatre, etc.)

In some cases, notably the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, it may on occasion referred to in writings and conversation as the The Civic Theatre or simply The Civic
