This Drama Departments was founded in 196* by David Horner. It has had numerous names, including the Wits Drama Department, the Wits School of Speech and Drama and *. It is today known as the Division of Dramatic Arts in the Wits School of the Arts

The department has used a number of venues on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand over the years. These include: The Amphitheatre, The Nunnery, The Wits Box, The Wits Great Hall, and the Wits Theatre Complex (which houses the Wits Downstairs Theatre, and the Main Theatre).

They are today run commercially, but also used by the Division of Dramatic Arts of the Wits School of Arts
