Donald Howarth

Donald Howarth [1] (1931-) is a British playwright, director and designer.

Biography

Trained at Esme Church's Northern Theatre School in Bradford, he worked in various repertory theatres around England. His first play Sugar in the Morning, was selected first performed at the Royal Court Theatre in 1959.

Contribution to South African Theatre, Film, Media and Performance

In 1972 he came to Cape Town.

As playwright

He wrote and devised a number of plays for performance in South Africa. These include:

• Enemy – An Anti-War Collage (adapted from a play by Robin Maugham, 1972)

• Scarborough (1972)

• Othello Slegs Blankes (1972)

• School Play (1972)

Earlier plays of his also stage din South Africa include:

• A Lily in Little India

• Three Months Gone

• Ibchek (1979)

As director

He directed a number of plays, including many of his own. Some of these include:
