Retribution is a domestic drama in four acts by Tom Taylor ( 1817–1880)[1]

The original text

Based on Charles de Bernard's French novel, La Loi du Talion (Martin Banham lists it as La Peine du Talion), and dealing with the play was first performed on 12 May 1856 in the Olympic Theatre, London. Published by Lacy in 1856 as No XXVII of Lacy's Acting Editions.

Performance history in South Africa

1859: Performed in the Harrington Street Theatre, Cape Town, by the Cape Town Dramatic Club on 27 May: Retribution (Taylor) with Masaniello (Brough?), and a performance of the brass band of the 59th Regiment.
