Biography
Vera was born in Cardiff, Wales.
Training
She studied at the Welsh National School of Music and Drama.
Career
She became a member of the Welsh Shakespearian Players and the Arena Theatre, the first theatre-in-the-round company in Britain. After three years in South Africa she returned to the United Kingdom where she played at the well-known Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and appeared in various BBC TV productions. After her return to South Africa in 1973 a long association began with the Academy Theatre and NAPAC.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Vera came to South Africa in 1961 and appeared for Taubie Kushlick in The Women. This was followed with roles in Women of Twilight, The House by the Lake, Hay Fever and others.
Performed inter alia in Birds of Paradise, A Murder is Announced, There Goes the Bride (at the Academy Theatre), The Unvarnished Truth (for Toerien/Firth), Fringe Benefits (for Fig Leaf Productions), The Heiress (NAPAC), Don't Drink the Water (with NAPAC), Nellie and the Cabman (for Brian Charteris), When We are Married (with NAPAC), Pygmalion (with NAPAC), Stevie. Other productions include Murder at the Vicarage and A… My Name is Alice.
She has been seen on television in The Dingleys, Last of the Dinosaurs, Death of a Teddybear and The Fiddlers.
Awards, etc
She was nominated as Best Supporting actress for her role as the Aunt in the Johannesburg production of Stevie for both the 1985 Vita and DALRO awards.
