The piece deals with two subjects at the same time: 1) Nxele Makana, the Xhosa prophet and prisoner who drowned while escaping from Robben Island in 1819, and 2) the survival of theatre and the performing arts in the New South Africa, as this production does, on National Arts Council (NAC) grants.
