Born in Lennoxtown, Scotland, he lived in South Africa for 17 years and studied drama at the University of Cape Town before returning to the United Kingdom. Married to South African-born actress Jennifer Woodburne since 1996. They currently live in London (2014).

Stage appearances in South Africa include Uncle Vanya (1993), The Two Gentlemen of Verona (Maynardville 1993), Dark Outsider (as Uys Krige, 1995), Burning Blue (1996).
