Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

In 1937 he directed University of Cape Town students in a production of Wild Decembers, after which, determined to form a professional company, he founded the Theatre Club. Their first performance was of Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author in 1938, at the Little Theatre, with Zoë Randall, Wensley Pithey, Margot Lassner, Frank Hammerton, Fred Loehnen and Gamble himself. (This was the first professional production to be staged at this theatre.) The Theatre Club broke up when Gamble left, but their performance of Pirandello’s play left a lasting impression on Cape Town audiences.
