Biography
Training
She studied at the University of Pretoria.
Career
Birrie joined PACT. She also worked for CAPAB and The Space Theatre over the years, and did other freelance work, i.a. for Marthinus Basson.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Her stage work includes costumes for Dusa, Fish, Stas and Vi, The Eternal Dance, The Final Sting of the Dying Wasp, Play it again, Sam at The Space in the 1970s; designs for The Merchant of Venice (Maynardville, 1992, The Road to Mecca (CAPAB , 1989), O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night (CAPAB, 1989), Reza de Wet's Mis (CAPAB, 1993), Ibsen's Spoke (CAPAB, 1990), Nag, Moeder van die Dag (CAPAB, 1991), The Merry Wives of Windsor (1991), Die Skewe Sirkel (directed by Marthinus Basson, 1992), costume designer for Uncle Vanya directed by Janice Honeyman, 2004, Twaalfde Nag (Oude Libertas Theatre and Baxter Theatre, 2005), Begeerte, (the translation of Eugene O’Neill’s Desire under the Elms, Baxter Theatre and KKNK 2006), The List. She also did the costumes for Die Vuurvoël.
In 2015 she designed costumes for Die Seemeeu.
She also worked as production designer on prominent films such as Fiela se Kind (1988), Paljas (1997), Meluda (200*) and The Story of an African Farm (2004), Poppie Nongena (2019).
Awards
The Merchant of Venice (Maynardville, 1992 - Vita Award for best costume design, The Road to Mecca (CAPAB , 1989 – Vita Award for best design). In 2016 she was awarded a Fleur du Cap for best costume design for Orpheus in Africa.
