The Open School Street and Community Theatre Programme was an outreach and community-centered initiative in Cape Town.

The programme

The arts initiative was developed in the 1970s to bring educational and theatrical arts directly into streets and local communities. Associated with community-based cultural movements and anti-apartheid arts education in South Africa, it used street theatre, community performance, and open learning spaces to engage youth and residents.

It is said to have inspired subsequent community arts and after-school initiatives across the country, such as modern creative training and rural outreach projects.

Among the cultural productions created under its auspices were Don Mattera's plays Kagiso Sechaba (a children's play) and One Time Brother.

The programme was also involved in the publication of the theatre journal Speak and the theatre project known as Open School on the Move.
