Speak (1977-1979) was a short-lived theatre journal, founded and edited by Rob Amato (1943-2006).

Not to be confused with the later Speak Magazine (1982-1994), a highly influential popular culture publication edited by Eve Bertelsen[1]

The publication

Founded and edited by Rob Amato, the publication emerged alongside S'ketsh' (which Amato co-edited) as a crucial and influential avant-garde media platform. It provided a progressive voice for community politics, underground art, and popular theater during the apartheid era. Amato used these media outlets, alongside his involvement with the Imitha Players and The People's Space Theatre, to counter oppressive state censorship and foster creative political intervention.the first issue was published in December 1977 and was published till 1979.
