Biography
Born in Johannesburg.
Training
Caplan graduated from Rhodes University with a B.Mus (hons) in History and Theory of Western Music in 1997. In 1993 he was a member of Professor Andrew Tracey's Steelband.
Career
Caplan lectured and taught music at Rhodes University and Diocesan School for Girls in Grahamstown.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Anthony Caplan is South African composer who works in the African music tradition. He has composed a number of works including The Moon Prince, Symphony Makuvatsine and Men-Jaro.
- The Moon Prince (1997) was written for Co-Opera with librettist Gwyneth Lloyd.
- Black Easter (2002) (Caplan arranged classical-African styled fusion pieces for the production which travelled to Holland).
- Men-Jaro (2006) was commissioned as a dance piece by choreographer Vincent Mantsoe and uses only African instruments. It premiered in 2006 in Johannesburg and has been performed internationally.
