It Should Happen to a Dog is a play by Wolf Mankowitz (1924-1998)[1].
Not to be confused with It Shouldn't Happen to a Dog, a 1946 American comedy crime film[2].
Contents
The original text
Based on the Biblical story of Jonah, Mankowitz presents the story of Jonah a modern language re-working of the well known Bible story with a few added extras. God wants Jonah to cry against the great city of Nineveh. Jonah wants a quiet life. One of them is going to have to compromise.
Originally written as a TV film, broadcast by the BBC on 9 August 1955, directed by Tony Richardson with Alfie Bass and David Kossoff. A stage version of the text was published by Evans Brothers, London, in 1959.
The stage version was published for use in South African schools in the collection The Distance Remains and Other Plays, compiled by Robin Malan, Oxford University Press, 1996.
