The Distance Remains and Other Plays is a collection of seven short plays/play extracts from around the world, compiled by Robin Malan.

The collection

Published by Oxford University Press South Africa in 1996.

Intended for use by for Std 6 to 10 English students, the volume contains four South African plays. Each play in the volume is followed by notes by Robin Malan which discuss the play's themes and offer practical advice on staging the play.

The plays included in the volume are:

The Oyster and the Pearl by William Saroyan

Have You Seen Zandile? is a play by Gcina Mhlope, with Maralin Vanrenen and Thembi Mtshali. The collection includes extracts from the play.

It Should Happen to a Dog by Wolf Mankowitz

Buckingham Palace, District Six by Richard Rive. The collection includes extracts from the play.

The Coat by Athol Fugard with the Serpent Players

The Distance Remains by Masitha Hoeane
