Polander is the name of a puppet show put on by the so-called "Automata" or "Automaton Figures", large mechanical puppets, of W.F.H. Parker.
The performance apparently consisted of a "figure (Pop) dancing on the tight rope and then retiring from the stage in a splendid display of fireworks". (Advert in De Meditator, quoted by Bosman, 1928: p. 231).
Performance history in South Africa
1837: Brought to in Cape Town by Mr Parker, and performed along with The Enchanted Turk, the dramatic play The Children in the Wood and Joey Grimaldi's Trip to Brentford.
