Leonce und Lena ("Leonce and Lena") is a German play by Georg Büchner (1813–1837)[1].

The original text

The play was written in German with the title Leonce und Lena. It was first performed in Munich in 1895 by an amateur group.

The text published in the collection Gesamtausgabe der Werke und Briefe von Georg Buchner edited by Fritz Bergemann.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into English as Leonce and Lena by Victor Price, and published in The plays of Georg Buchner, a translation of the volume Gesamtausgabe der Werke und Briefe von Georg Buchner edited by Fritz Bergemann. Contents: Danton's Death, Leonce and Lena, Woyzeck. Oxford University Press, 1971.

An Afrikaans translation titled Leonce en Lena was done by Wilma Stockenström and Ants Kirsipuu.

Another Afrikaans translation and adaptation, titled Die Opstand van die Narre ("The rising of the clowns"), was done by Tjaart Potgieter.

1986: Die Opstand van die Narre was presented by TRUK Toneel at the Momentum Theatre, Pretoria, directed by Dieter Reible, starring Louis van Niekerk, Frans Kalp, Charlotte Butler, Eric Nobbs, Ilse van Hemert, Cas van Rensburg, Gert van Niekerk, Peter Terry, Percy Pretorius, Ronel Kriel, Cas van Rensburg. Design, lighting and costumes by James MacNamara.
