The original text
No specific play by this particular name has so far been found, but according to a list of Dutch plays provided by Petit (1887), there are a number of similarly titled texts in Dutch, all apparently derived from German originals, including:
Vrouwelist, of De Losbol van Veertig Jaren, ("Women's wiles, or the playboy of forty years") a one act play with music, freely translated from a play by J.C. Honig, the Dutch version published by K van der Meulen, Zaandam, in 1815.
Vrouwelist Koomt Alles te Boven ("Women's wiles overcome everything) a three-act comedy by H. Hoogd, based on the German, published in Utrecht in 1793
De Gelukte Vrouwelist, of De Bedroge Minnaar, ("The fortunate women's wiles, or the cheated lover") a farce by Jan van Dinteren, published by Willem Barentsz, Amsterdam, in 1722.
It was most probably one of these texts that was performed in Cape Town in 1911 under the title List van Vrouwen.
Translations and adaptations
Performance history in South Africa
